What We’re Into This Week: Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three at Hotel Foster

The Hotel Foster welcomes Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three to Milwaukee on Friday, December 7.

Of the many roots musicians traveling the world and spreading the early American music tradition, Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three are the next in line to make a significant impact on music enthusiasts everywhere. From St. Louis, Missouri, their creative mix of early jazz, string ragtime, country blues and western swing rings true and fine, making them among the most innovative of all the purists performing American roots music today.

Tune into WMSE (91.7 FM or www.wmse.org) to listen to an in-studio performance before the show at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, too.

DARK DARK DARK at Sweet Water for BVGN *** 9/28 !!! ***

Dark Dark Dark (Supply & Demand Music)

As crisp Autumn winds cut Milwaukee’s dog days it carries with it a dread of snow and Minneapolis’ Dark Dark Dark. With lead crooner Nona Marie Invie as the harbinger, you just may have the courage or at least the somber resignation to stick it out another Winter. The Minneapolis/New Orleans’ quintet will be toting their latest atmospheric, avant-pop effort Who Needs Who to the cavernous corridors of Sweet Water Organics for Bay View Gallery Night.
Despite parlor-folk instrumentation like banjo, accordion and piano, you won’t find the merry preciousness of Lumineers or Edward Sharpe here; rather emotional lamentations as raw and dark as their moniker suggests. DDD’s sparse but heady arrangements have the heft of Antony and the Johnsons, but with Invie’s refreshingly quirky croon reminiscent of Regina Spektor. The lyrics may evoke painful introspection over a breakup with founding member Marshall LaCount, but they never cross into brash brooding or depression. Invie’s words even reach empowerment and hope on their latest effort, out on Supply & Demand Music October 2nd.

WHITE RABBITS *** 10/16/2012

Battlecry and 91.7 FM WMSE are pleased to welcome White Rabbits back to Milwaukee for a return performance at the Cactus Club…

 it’ll be a re-welcoming party on Tuesday, October 16th, and you’re invited.

With past stops in Milwaukee landing Brooklyn’s (by way of Missouri) White Rabbits on Turner Hall Ballroom’s stage (their first, opening for city-mates The Walkmen), the sextet known for their taut, high-energy performances are sure to pop even more brightly in a more intimate setting. The band’s single “Percussion Gun”, winning them special acclaim, landed them on Letterman and Kimmel, among other spots. With its rapid-fire beats, agonizing minor guitar chords and brisk piano, the song tugged at listeners’ energies too, with its urgent tone.

Rooted in the same hard-hitting, straightforward and bile-fueled rock as The Walkmen’s early material as well as an equal dose of sweet, taken from one of their long-time favorites The Specials, White Rabbits know how important it is to know when to play it up and when to play it out. Their two-drummer approach (compliments of Jamie Levinson and Matthew Clark) gives their music an appealing drive and swapping lead vocals lends a freshness to their stage presence.

Their recent album, It’s Frightening (TBD) was produced by Spoon’s Britt Daniels and it’s easy to understand the band’s choice, as White Rabbits use piano to rock out as much as with standard guitars and bass. Their even more recent followup, Milk Famous follows suit even more closely and makes White Rabbits linear proteges of the popular indie rockers. Last year, Battlecry welcomed them to and watched them play to a sold-out show. We’re hoping they’ll (and you will) have that experience, again.

THEESatisfaction 08/24/12

THEEsatisfaction (SUB POP RECORDS)

THEESatisfaction are Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White. The pair live/laugh/love/dance and create in Seattle, WA. They write, produce and perform their own material: funk-psychedelic feminista sci-fi epics with the warmth and depth of Black Jazz and Sunday morning soul, frosted with icy raps that evoke equal parts Elaine Brown, Ursula Rucker and Q-Tip. Immediately embraced for their singular sound, unflinching commentary, and immortal groove, Stas and Cat made friends, fans and family from coast to coast via their own immaculate grind; a combo of sharp digital hustle and self-booked, self-financed tours that connected them to like minds everywhere.”

“In 2008, a group of five friends who met at Oberlin College started a project they called Starring with modest ambitions to play loud and wild prog rock in late-night headlining slots around Brooklyn’s DIY circuit. The band’s first recordings (which appeared only as hand-made cassettes and a small run of LPs on screen-printed vinyl), were described by critics at the Village Voice as “kraut” or “circus” punk, apt names for music that was exploring ways to join punk minimalism with proggy, psychedelic maximalism.”

“The band is nearly as omnivorous as King Crimson when it comes to genre, and just as good at making all the bits fit together: I think I’m picking up Deep Purple, the MC5, Sonic Youth, Soft Machine, and Devo, all sitting together on the same plate so that everybody’s sauce leaks into everybody’s meat. It’s a heady and beautiful blend.” – The Chicago Reader
