Battlecry Spotlight On: Football (the band, not the sport. duh.)

Chicago’s noisy-ass punk band, Football, is hard to find on the Internet, but that’s okay. They’re best found in-person, anyway. Their loud, abrasive brand of punk (click links to experience) has lots of the grit you’d expect and some excellent emo-Chicago tendencies you might not expect (and secretly enjoy). With hollowed-out vocals (vaguely reminiscent of Barney Gumble) and relentless guitars, these fellas are pro at riling people up whether they planned on getting riled up or not.  Oh, and do the names Ponys, Baseball Furies, Hot Machines, Tight Phantomz, France Has the Bomb or A/V Murder mean anything to you? If yeah, you’ll be happy to note that the connections with these bands are tight.

Football opens up for Jaill’s release party in a couple weeks. We hope they like bowling and we hope you’ll like Football.

The David Mayfield Parade w/ Tim Schweiger & The Middlemen + Jaackrasch

For being the older brother of oft-buzzed-about crooner Jessica Lea Mayfield and touring pal of the one and only Avett Brothers, David Mayfield sure keeps a low cover…

…which probably won’t last all that long. Mayfield’s charisma and Southern cred (and semi-famous sibling) have made him one of the most winning folks on the folk circuit and his acclaimed outfit,Cadillac Sky, has gotten its fair amount of attention. The man can sling a double bass and sing like an angel. See this video he did (to prove that, indeed, he is a winning, angelic fellow) and see him at Club Garibaldi’s when he pays Milwaukee a visit on a Friday near you.

JAILL ~ 06.08.12 ~ Record Release Bowling – Taco Extravaganza!!!

Battlecry & WMSE 91.7 fm & 88 Nine Radio Milwaukee Present:

Milwaukee’s Jaill is neither frilly nor fancy…

what better way to welcome the quintet’s newest into existence than surrounded by black lights and used shoes?

Walking in a straight line between tacky and inspiring, Jaill’s music is both completely smarter than your smartiest pants, but probably a bit dirtier than your dirtiest pants. They’re the band that is charming, inappropriate, close-mouthed and impossibly intelligent, all in one go. Their take on pop music comes with plenty of quirks, big words, psych sounds, pretty guitars, hooks, vocal harmonies and underlying aggression that somehow remains playful and humble. The band’s first round of recordings, catchy as catchy can be, always hinted at something more muscular, and that something became more ear-apparent upon the release of their Sub Pop Records debut, That’s How We Burn(2010).

Two years down and Traps is set for release. Jaill sounds comfortable and confident, especially evident on their recently-released single, “Waste a Lot of Things”, which is a repeat-er of a song and easily so. Sub Pop says the rest of Traps will follow suitTraps is pretty, it’s moody, it pops. It has the scrappy, vengeful enthusiasm of a puppy stuck under a blanket. It’s an adorably grumpy bear just awoken from his long winter’s slumber, with a mangy heart rarely found outside of the stuffed animal bin of a Salvation Army. It’s an album that expects to be taken seriously goddammit, even though it just puked on the bar.” Yup. Same old Jaill we know. And we’ll keep coming back for more…and so we do with a special night in store.

Get ready for an evening of fun in Milwaukee as Jaill celebrates their new album just a bit early for hometown’s sake complete with glow bowling and eating tacos. Pick up Traps before the release date, too. Find the band and challenge them to a bowling game or a taco-eating contest. As long as they make the stage on time, it’s all good.

Pleased to Announce: Beat Connection w/ White Arrows — Cactus Club 7/14

Man o h mano. Super rope bands Beat Connection and White Arrows at Cactus in July. Going to need the sweat bands for this one.

Here’s a bit we lifted from the bio. Give more attention to the video and tunes!

Beat Connection is Jordan Koplowitz and Reed Juenger with help from friends and lovers, especially Tom Eddy, an amazing vocalist whos presence can be duely felt on “In The Water” and “Silver Screen”.

Reed and Jordan play piles of electronics: including, but not limited to, mpcs, midi keyboards, sp-404s, dd-5s, torq, logic, kaoss pads, microkorgs, guitars, vocal effects. When working in the studio its all about Logic and using everything at our disposal. This sometimes involves filter sweeps, crash cymbals, and found sound recordings, other times guitar will do the trick.

 White Arrows:
White Arrows may never divulge the source of their strange magic, but it’s hard not to picture a mystic dance floor hidden in the midst of a tropical rainforest. The Los Angeles band stands at these balmy crossroads like a vision from an alternate reality: classic without leaning on nostalgia, visionary but not unfamiliar. What should be a collision of sounds and styles-ritualistic rhythm and four-four thump, synth sequences and strummed guitars, garage-y grind and airy atmosphere-is, in this quintet’s capable hands, a fluidly seething whole. Call it Psychotropical pop, something both busy and breezy. Call it Paul Simon in space (others have). Call it what you will. This is White Arrows.

Looking Back and Going Forward: Taking it On From 2011

It’s already the twenty-eighth of January as we type this…incredible! Before we get too far ahead of ourselves with what already is shaping up to be a great 2012, we want to thank all of those who came out to our shows in 2011. Shows where maybe you knew the headliner, but never had heard the supporting acts…or maybe it was the other way around. Or, maybe the only bands you were familiar with on the bill were the local ones.

In any case, a big thanks is in order to you, the show-goer, the venues and all the inspiring musicians who we were lucky to have come to Milwaukee, many of them being not only good musicians, but great people to meet and know as well. Here’s who we hosted last year:
